Yo-landi Vi$$er casted for a David Fincher movie?

01.07.2010

So what's going on with dis stuff about Yo-landi Vi$$er playing a role in a Us movie by David Fincher? Here some articles on it and lets wait for further details on that zeflings. David Fincher is developing his adaptation of the Stieg Larsson novel The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and has been talking to Daniel Craig for the lead male role. That’s spot-on casting, but there’s another big puzzle piece: Fincher still has to find an actress to play the data-gathering expert Lisbeth Salander. He’s reportedly looking toward unknowns, and name actresses like Carey Mulligan have expressed great interest in the part.

Now we’re told that Fincher has a model in mind for Salander — singer/ rapper / performance artist Yo-Landi Vi$$er, from the South African group Die Antwoord.

Assuming that Vi$$er is as much on Fincher’s mind as Vulture says, the question is: does he actually want to cast the rapper, who has no demonstrated acting experience outside the context of the band’s videos, or is she merely representative of what he thinks Salander should look and act like?

I can see why the director might consider Vi$$er at least a visual ideal for the part — she’s got a memorably strange look, but despite her diminutive size, the rapper looks wiry and almost tough. She’s a contrast to Noomi Rapace, who made a mark playing the part in the Swedish film version of the book, but not a total break from the character as Larsson described her. (And Die Antwoord is attracting other major filmmaking talent — Neill Blomkamp is reportedly working with the group.)

I’m quite curious to read the Steve Zaillian script from which Fincher will work. The original title of Larsson’s novel translates to ‘men who hate women,’ and the Swedish film version isn’t at all shy about putting the Salander character through hell. If Fincher is just as explicit this will be a demanding and revealing role. Obviously that’s why quite a number of established actresses are interested — it’s a meaty, high-profile part, the sort of thing that really doesn’t come around that often.

Vulture writes:

In case you were wondering what David Fincher envisions superhacker and ass-kicking private investigator Lisbeth Salander will look like in his forthcoming adaptation of the bestseller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, just attend a Die Antwoord concert. Sources tell Vulture that Fincher has been raving that the breakout South African rap group's bleached-blonde, mullet-sporting Yo-Landi Vi$$er is exactly who he wants his Salander to look and act like.

Less clear is whether Fincher specifically hopes to get Vi$$er herself for his Columbia film's Salander role, or merely is holding her up as his ideal meme girl. Insiders at William Morris Endeavor — which reps Die Antwoord, now on a world tour — caution that "while we know Fincher really likes her, it's not clear if that role is real yet." Other movie studios have also been calling WME inquiring about Vi$$er's availability and interest in acting; this wave of attention was likely sparked by Fincher's interest, as well as her recent raised profile and unique look.

Meanwhile, Carey Mulligan (An Education) has also long been rumored for the Salander part, as has Twilight star Kristen Stewart, though she recently told David Letterman she's too busy to even think about trying for the coveted hacker gig. Busy, like world tour busy? We thought not!

The playlist writes:

With Daniel Craig all-but-officially-announced for the lead role in David Fincher's adaptation of the Stieg Larsson best-seller "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," attentions are moving on to the film's other lead, the character of teen hacker Lisbeth Salander, one of the most hotly sought-after roles in recent years. Carey Mulligan has been campaigning for the role, with "mutual admiration" being expressed by both parties, and names like Ellen Page, Kristen Stewart, Mia Wasikowska, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Thirlby and Scarlett Johansson have all been mentioned.

The pack thinned slightly when Stewart ruled herself out earlier in the week, citing her commitment to "On The Road" and "Breaking Dawn," but now a new, fairly unlikely candidate has emerged. Fincher's long been keen on the idea of casting a relative unknown in the role, and Vulture are reporting that Yo-Landi Vi$$er, a member of the South African rap group Die Antwoord has caught Fincher's attention.

The band, who may or not be an elaborate performance art project, broke after some of their videos hit the web earlier in the year, leading to a huge viral success, with the group being booked for Coachella and heading out on a world tour. The band are also rumored to be working with fellow South African Neill Blomkamp ("District 9") on a video. According to Vulture, Fincher's seen their clips, and has decided that the band's pint-size rapper Vi$$er is "exactly who he wants his Salander to look and act like." She's certainly a good fit visually, and there's a level of performance in the videos (you can see one below) that suggest she might be able to act.

Vulture were unclear if Vi$$er is in the running for the role, or was simply being used as a model, but we reached out to sources on the project. They confirmed that Vi$$er's name has indeed come up, but that she is just one of many people vying for the part. But even if Vi$$er doesn't land the role, it's not the end of the world; she's supposedly had interest from other studios as a result of the attention. At least it's not Ke$ha, we suppose...

Can she act anyway?? I gotta admit that yolandi looks a bit like i imagined the character. Although I don't think there's room in Yolandis agenda for these type of things.

I think she can act just fine if you watch her on stage and in clips. Yolandi for president!
